the act of binding, a bond), from Sanskrit <strong>\u092c\u0927\u094d\u0928\u093e\u0924\u093f<\/strong> (badhn\u0101ti &#8211; to bind, tether), from Proto-Indo-Iranian <em>*b\u02b0ad\u02b0n\u00e1Hti<\/em>, from Proto-Indo-European <em>*b\u02b0n\u0325d\u02b0-n\u00e9h\u2082-ti<\/em> (to bind, tie), from <em>b\u02b0end\u02b0-<\/em> (to bind, bond) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bandana#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same PIE roots include <strong>band<\/strong>, <strong>bandage<\/strong>, <strong>bend<\/strong>, <strong>bind<\/strong>, <strong>bond<\/strong>, <strong>bonnet<\/strong>, <strong>bundle<\/strong>, <strong>funicular<\/strong>, <strong>tulip<\/strong> and <strong>turban<\/strong> in English, and <strong>Bund<\/strong> (alliance, federation, league) in German [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/b%CA%B0end%CA%B0-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots, via Proto-Celtic <em>*benn\u0101<\/em>, include <strong>ben<\/strong> (cart, wagon) in Welsh, <strong>buinne<\/strong> (circlet, bracelet, wickerwork) in Irish, <em>benna<\/em> (a kind of carriage) in Latin, <strong>benne<\/strong> (bin, skip, dump truck, barrow, cable car) in French, <strong>bin<\/strong> in English, and <strong>benna<\/strong> (bucket, grab) in Italian [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/benna#Gaulish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, before I discovered the origins of the word <strong>bandana<\/strong>, I would have guessed that it came from Spanish, and was possibly borrowed from an indigenous language of the Americas, like <strong>barbecue<\/strong>, <strong>canoe<\/strong>, <strong>hammock<\/strong>, <strong>tuna<\/strong> and <strong>papaya<\/strong>, all of which come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/taino.htm\">Ta\u00edno<\/a>, an Arawakan language that was spoken across the Caribbean [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:Spanish_terms_borrowed_from_Ta%C3%ADno\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3m4WZUVv23o\">video<\/a> I made of this information:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3m4WZUVv23o\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allow=\"accelerometer;
