possibly from the Proto-Italic <em>*pl\u0101nt\u0101<\/em>, from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*pleh\u2082-<\/em> (flat) or from the Proto-Italic <em>*pl\u0101nkt\u0101<\/em>, from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*pleh\u2082k-\/*pleh\u2082g-<\/em> (to strike, fast) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cland#Old_Irish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Related words in the Celtic Breton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The English word <strong>plant<\/strong> comes from the same roots, via Middle English, Old English and Latin [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/plant#English\">source<\/a>], as does the word <strong>plantain<\/strong>, via Middle English, Anglo-Norman, Old French and Latin [<a German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish.
