It comes from the Middle English <em>spel(l)<\/em> (story, tale, narrative, report), from the Old English <em>spell<\/em> (news, story, prose), from the Proto-Germanic <em>spell\u0105<\/em> (news, message, tale, story, legend),from the PIE <em>*spel-<\/em> (to tell) or from <em>*b\u02b0el-<\/em> (to speak, sound) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/spell#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same roots include <strong>gospel<\/strong> and <strong>byspel<\/strong> (an example \u2014 <em>rare<\/em>) in English; <strong>spjall<\/strong> (talk, gossip) and <strong>spjalla<\/strong> (to chat, converse) in Icelandic; and <strong>fjal\u00eb<\/strong> (word) in Albanian [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic\/spell%C4%85\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>spell<\/strong> (to be able to write or say the letters that form words), also comes from the same root, via the Middle English <em>spellen<\/em> (to mean, signify, interpret, to spell out letters), the Old French <em>espeler<\/em> (to call, cry out, shout, explain, tell), the Frankish <em>*spel\u00f4n<\/em>, and the Proto-Germanic <em>*spell\u014dn\u0105<\/em> (to speak) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/spell#Etymology_2\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6TZrFNfT0cg\">video<\/a> I made of this information:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6TZrFNfT0cg\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allow=\"accelerometer;
