The English words <strong>leaf<\/strong>, <strong>lobby<\/strong> and <strong>lodge<\/strong> possibly come from the same roots [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/liber#Latin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A Middle English word for library was <em>boch(o)us<\/em>, from the Old English <em>b\u014dch\u016bs<\/em> [\u02c8bo\u02d0k\u02cchu\u02d0s] (library), from <em>b\u014dc<\/em> (book) and <em>h\u016bs<\/em> (house). The word <strong>bookhouse<\/strong> (a repository\/store of books, library) exists in modern English, although is not in common usage [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bochus#Middle_English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Cognates of <strong>library<\/strong> in Romance languages, such as <strong>librarie<\/strong> in French and <strong>librer\u00eda<\/strong> in Spanish, mean \u2018bookshop \/ bookstore\u2019. They used to mean library until about the 16th century, and were replaced by words derived from the the Latin <strong>biblioth\u0113ca<\/strong> (library) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bibliotheca#Latin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>bibliotheca<\/strong> used to be used in English to mean a collection or catalogue of books, or a library.
