The Proto-Celtic word <em>*bardos<\/em> was borrowed into Latin as <em>bardus<\/em> (bard), which became <strong>barde<\/strong> in French and <strong>bardo<\/strong> in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/weny%C4%81\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Proto-Celtic word <em>*weless<\/em> means seer or poet. It comes from the Proto-Celtic <em>*weleti<\/em> (to see) from the PIE <em>*wel<\/em> (to see) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/wel-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Descendants in modern Celtic languages include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>file<\/strong> [\u02c8f\u02b2\u026al\u02b2\u0259] = poet, song-maker, lyricist, satirist, scold in Irish<\/li>\n<li><strong>filidh<\/strong> [fil\u026a] = minstrel, poet (<em>traditionally a member of one of the seven ranks of poets, all of which are above the b\u00e0rd<\/em>) in Scottish Gaelic<\/li>\n<li><strong>feelee<\/strong> = poet in Manx<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Words for to see in Welsh (<strong>gweld<\/strong>), Cornish (<strong>gweles<\/strong>) and Breton (<strong>gwelet<\/strong>) come from the Proto-Celtic <em>*weleti<\/em>, as to parts of the verb to be in Irish (<strong>bhfuil<\/strong>), Scottish Gaelic (<strong>bheil<\/strong>) and Manx (<strong>vel<\/strong>)  &#8211;
