I felt quite feverish earlier this week, so today we\u2019re uncovering the origins of the word <strong>fever<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omniglot\/52256718190\/in\/photostream\/\" title=\"Promen\u00e2d Aberystwyth Promenade\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52256718190_538a21f680_z.jpg\" alt=\"Promen\u00e2d Aberystwyth Promenade\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\"><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<em>Promen\u00e2d Aberystwyth Promenade<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A <strong>fever<\/strong> [\u02c8fi\u02d0v\u0259 \/ \u02c8fiv\u025a] is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A higher than normal body temperature of a person (or, generally, a mammal), usually caused by disease.<\/li>\n<li>Any of various diseases, such as scarlet fever<\/li>\n<li>A state of excitement or anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>A group of stingrays.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from the Middle English <strong>fever(e)<\/strong> (fever), from the Old English <em>fefer \/ fefor<\/em> (fever), from the Latin <em>febris<\/em> (fever), from the Proto-Italic <em>*fe\u0263\u02b7ris<\/em> (fever),  from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*d\u02b0eg\u02b7\u02b0ris<\/em> from <em>*d\u02b0eg\u02b7\u02b0-<\/em> (to burn, warm, hot) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/fever#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same PIE root include <strong>day<\/strong> in English, and words for day in other Germanic languages, <strong>daigh<\/strong> (flame, fire, pain, pang) in Irish, and possibly <strong>defio<\/strong> [\u02c8d\u0259\u0268\u032fvj\u0254] (to scorch, singe, blast, blight) in Welsh [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/d%CA%B0eg%CA%B7%CA%B0-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Old English the word for fever was <strong>hri\u00fe<\/strong> [r\u0325i\u03b8], which comes from the Proto-Germanic <em>*hri\u00feiz<\/em> (trembling, the shakes, the shivers, fever) from the PIE <em>*kret-<\/em> (to shake, quiver, tremble) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/hri%C3%BE#Old_English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same PIE root possibly include <strong>cryd<\/strong> [kr\u0268\u02d0d \/ kri\u02d0d] (shivering, trembling, fever) in Welsh, and <strong>crith<\/strong> (a\/to shake, quiver, tremble) in Irish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/kritos\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pdWiPhSpgDw\">video<\/a> I made of this information:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pdWiPhSpgDw\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allow=\"accelerometer;
