Gaelic<\/li>\n<li><strong>gouenn<\/strong> = race in Breton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The name of <strong>Vannes<\/strong> [van], a town in Brittany, comes from the same Proto-Celtic root, via the Latin <em>Veneti<\/em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/weny%C4%81\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same PIE root include <strong>venom<\/strong>, <strong>Venus<\/strong>, <strong>wonder<\/strong>, <strong>wean<\/strong> and <strong>winsome<\/strong> in English, <strong>v\u00e4n<\/strong> (friend) in Swedish, and <strong>gwenwyn<\/strong> (poison, venom) in Welsh [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/wenh%E2%82%81-\">source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The Proto-Celtic word <strong>*genos<\/strong> (family, clan, birth) is the root of  <strong>in\u00edon<\/strong> [\u02c8\u026an\u02b2i\u02d0n\u02b2] (daughter, girl maiden, (young) woman, Miss) in Irish, <strong>nighean<\/strong> [\u0272i\u02d0.an\u032a\u02e0] (daughter, girl, lass) in Scottish Gaelic, and <strong>inneen<\/strong> [\u026an\u02c8ji\u02d0n] (daughter, girl) in Manx [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/genos\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It also makes up part of the Irish name <strong>Eoghan<\/strong> [o\u02d0n\u032a\u02e0], the Scottish Gaelic name <strong>E\u00f2ghan<\/strong> [jo\u02d0.\u0259n\u032a\u02e0], both of which are thought to come from the Proto-Celtic name <em>*Iwogenos<\/em>, from <em>*iwos<\/em> (yew) and <em>*genos<\/em> (born, family) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Eoghan#Irish\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The name <strong>Morgan<\/strong> possibly comes from the Old Welsh name <em>Morgen<\/em> from <em>*mor<\/em> (sea) and <em>*gen<\/em> (born), from the Proto-Celtic <em>*genos<\/em> [<a href=\"hhttps:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Morgan\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The Proto-Celtic word <strong>*tegeso-slougo-<\/strong> means family or household.
