the knack.<\/li>\n<li>Something not understood or known.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from the Middle English <strong>secrette<\/strong> (secret),  from the Old French <strong>secret<\/strong> (secret), from the Latin <em>s\u0113cr\u0113tus<\/em>  (put apart, separated, severed), from <em>s\u0113cern\u014d<\/em> (to separate, set aside), from <em>s\u0113-<\/em> (aside, by itself) and <em>cern\u014d<\/em> (to see, discern), from the PIE <em>*krey<\/em> (to sift, separate, divide) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/secret#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>English words from the same PIE root include: <strong>certain<\/strong>, <strong>concern<\/strong>, <strong>crime<\/strong>, <strong>crisis<\/strong>,  <strong>critic<\/strong>, <strong>discreet<\/strong> and <strong>hypocrisy<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:English_terms_derived_from_the_Proto-Indo-European_root_*krey-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words in other languages from the same PIE root include: <strong>crynu<\/strong> [\u02c8kr\u0259n\u0268\/\u02c8kr\u0259ni] (to tremble, shiver, shudder) in Welsh, <strong>\u03ba\u03c1\u03af\u03bd\u03c9<\/strong> [\u02c8k\u027ei.no] (to judge, assess, decide) in Greek, <strong>cernere<\/strong> [\u02c8t\u0361\u0283\u025br.ne.re] to separate, distinguish, choose) in Italian, and <strong>kraj<\/strong> [kraj] (country, land, border) in Polish [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Category:English_terms_derived_from_the_Proto-Indo-European_root_*krey-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Old English a secret was a <em>d\u0113agol<\/em> [\u02c8d\u00e6\u035c\u0251\u02d0.\u0263ol], which also meant hidden, obscure or (poetically) dark, which became <em>di\u021del<\/em> in Middle English.
