It\u2019s a diminutive of <strong>potato<\/strong>, which comes from the Spanish <strong>patata<\/strong> (potato, piece of rubbish), from the Ta\u00edno <strong>batata<\/strong> (sweet potato) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/potato#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another word for potato is <strong>spud<\/strong> [sp\u028cd], which also means a sharp spadelike tool used for rooting or digging out weeds, and comes from the Middle English <strong>spudde<\/strong> [spud] (a small or inferior knife), possibly from the Old Norse <em>spj\u00f3t<\/em> (spear, lance), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*speut\u0105\/speutaz<\/em> (spear), from the PIE <em>*spewd-<\/em> (to press;
