a euphemism for their natural sons) as cardinals, and this practice became known as <strong>nepotism<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/nepotism\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>nephew<\/strong> comes from the same PIE root, via the Middle English <strong>nevew\/neveu<\/strong> (nephew, grandson), the Old French <em>neveu<\/em> (nephew), and the Latin <em>nep\u014ds<\/em> (grandson, granddaughter, nephew, niece, descendent) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/nephew\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>It displaced or absorbed the Middle English word <em>neve<\/em> [\u02c8n\u025b\u02d0v(\u0259)] (nephew), which came from the Old English <em>nefa<\/em> [\u02c8ne.f\u0251] (nephew, grandson, stepson), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*nef\u00f4<\/em> [\u02c8ne.\u0278\u0254\u02d0\u02d0] (nephew, grandson), from the PIE <em>*n\u00e9p\u014dts<\/em> [<a href=\"hhttps:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/neve#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the word <strong>knave<\/strong> (a tricky, deceitful fellow) sounds similar but comes from a different root: from the Middle English <em>knave\/knafe<\/em> [\u02c8kna\u02d0v(\u0259)] (son, boy, lad, servant, peasant), from the Old English <em>cnafa<\/em> [\u02c8kn\u0251.f\u0251] (boy, lad, young man), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*knab\u014d\/*knapp\u014d<\/em> (boy), which is of unknown origin [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/knave#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tQ7TC1Aef2Y\">video<\/a> I made of this information:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tQ7TC1Aef2Y\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allow=\"accelerometer;
