The <strong>pie<\/strong> in <strong>magpie<\/strong> possibly comes from the same root, via the Old French <em>pie<\/em> (magpie), and the Latin <em>p\u012bca<\/em> (magpie) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/pica#Latin\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The Latin word <em>p\u012bca<\/em> is the root of such words as the Spanish <strong>pica<\/strong> (pike, lance, pick, spade \u2660), and <strong>picar<\/strong> (to itch, sting, chop, bite), and the Italian <strong>pica<\/strong> (magpie) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/pica\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the name of the Pokemon character <strong>Pikachu<\/strong> has nothing to do with stings or magpies.
