[<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/s%C3%A9h%E2%82%82ls\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions include <strong>sare<\/strong> [\u02c8sa.re] in Romanian, <strong>zout<\/strong> [z\u0251u\u032ft] in Dutch, <strong>\u03b1\u03bb\u03ac\u03c4\u03b9<\/strong> [a\u02c8lati] in Greek, <strong>\u0561\u0572<\/strong> [\u0251\u0281] in Armenian, <strong>halen<\/strong> in Welsh, and <strong>holen<\/strong> in Cornish and Breton [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/s%C3%A9h%E2%82%82ls\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>salary<\/strong>, comes from the same PIE root, via Middle English <em>salarie<\/em>, Old French <em>salaire<\/em> and the Latin <em>sal\u0101rium<\/em> (salary), from <em>sal\u0101rius<\/em> (related to salt), from <em>sal<\/em> (salt). It is thought that <em>sal\u0101rium<\/em> was an abbreviation of <em>sal\u0101rium argentum<\/em> (salt money), as Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt.
