Used as a material for construction, to manufacture various items, etc. or as fuel.<\/li>\n<li>A forested or wooded area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from the Middle English <strong>wode<\/strong> [\u02c8wo\u02d0d(\u0259)] (wood), from the Old English <strong>wudu<\/strong> [\u02c8wu.du] (wood, forest, woods, tree), from the Proto-West-Germanic <em>*widu<\/em> (forest, tree, wood), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*widuz<\/em> [\u02c8wi.\u00f0uz] (wood), from the PIE <em>*h\u2081weyd\u02b0h\u2081<\/em> (wood, wilderness) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/wood#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Words from the same PIE root include <strong>ved<\/strong> (wood, firewood) in Swedish, Danish and Norwegian, <strong>gw\u0177dd<\/strong> [\u0261w\u0268\u02d0\u00f0] (trees) in Welsh, <strong>fiodh<\/strong> [f\u02b2\u026a] (wood, timber) in Irish, and <strong>vidus<\/strong> (middle, centre) in Latvian [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European\/h%E2%82%81weyd%CA%B0h%E2%82%81-\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>How did a word meaning wood come to mean middle or centre in Latvian?
