story<\/li>\n<li>a literary composition having the form of such a narrative<\/li>\n<li>a falsehood; lie<\/li>\n<li>a rumor or piece of gossip, often malicious or untrue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It used to mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>number, tally, quota<\/li>\n<li>account, estimation, regard, heed<\/li>\n<li>speech, language<\/li>\n<li>a speech, a statement, talk, conversation, discourse<\/li>\n<li>a count, declaration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It comes from the Middle English <em>tale<\/em> [\u02c8ta\u02d0l(\u0259)] (personal narrative, account), from the Old English <em>talu<\/em> [\u02c8t\u0251.lu] (account, reckoning, tale, narration) from the Proto-West Germanic <em>*talu<\/em> (narration, report, assessment, judgement, calculation, counting), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*tal\u014d<\/em> (narration, report), from the PIE <em>*dol-\u00e9h\u2082<\/em> (reckoning, calculation, fraud), from <em>*del-<\/em> (to reckon, calculate) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/tale#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Some words from the same Proto-Germanic root include <strong>tell<\/strong> in English, <strong>taal<\/strong> [ta\u02d0l]  (language) in Dutch and Afrikaans, <strong>Zahl<\/strong> [tsa\u02d0l] (number, numeral, figure) in German, <strong>tala<\/strong> [\u02c8t\u02b0a\u02d0la] (a speech, button, number) in Icelandic, <strong>tala<\/strong> [\u02c8t\u0251\u02d0\u02ccla] (to speak, tell, talk) in Swedish, and <strong>tale<\/strong> [\u02c8t\u02e2\u00e6\u02d0l\u0259] (speech, talk, discourse;
