Emoticon is short for \u201cemotion icon\u201d and first appeared in 1994 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/emoticon\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Earlier sightings of possible emoticons in the wild include a possibly smiley face in 1648 in <em>To Fortune<\/em>, a poem by Robert Herrick, an English poet, that appears in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/herrickshesperid00herruoft\/page\/268\/mode\/2up?ref=ol&amp;view=theater&amp;q=Fortune\"><em>The Hesperides &amp; Noble Numbers<\/em><\/a>, a collection of his poems. This appears in only one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/openlibrary.org\/works\/OL2725362W\/Hesperides\">online editions<\/a> of his work though:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/various\/tofortune.jpg\" alt=\"Tumble me down, and I will sit \/ Upon my ruins, (smiling yet:)\" width=\"579\" height=\"309\"><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/19\/hfo-emoticon\/\">transcription of a speech by Abraham Lincoln<\/a> published in <em>The New York Times<\/em> on 7th August 1862, a possible wink emoticon appears: (applause and laughter ;), although it is debated whether this was an emoticon or just punctuation.<\/p>\n<p>In 1881 the satirical magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.brainpickings.org\/post\/38732179273\/the-birth-of-emoticons-one-of-100-diagrams-that\">Puck<\/a> published examples of typographical art using puncutation marks to express joy, melancholy, indifference or astonishment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/typographicalart.gif\" alt=\"Examples of early emoticons by Scott Fahlman\" width=\"423\" height=\"101\"><\/p>\n<p>In 1912 Ambrose Bierce, an American writer and journalist, suggested uses a bracket \u203f  to represent a smile, and called it the snigger point or note of cachination [kak\u026a\u02c8ne\u026a\u0283(\u0259)n] (loud, convulsive laughter).<\/p>\n<p>Other writers proposed ways to use punctuation marks to represent faces, including Alan Gregg, who wrote in a 1936 article in the <em>Harvard Lampoon<\/em> that (-) could represent a smile, (\u2014) a laughing smile, (#) a frown and (*) a wink.<\/p>\n<p>First smiley emoticons created by Scott Fahlman, Professor Emeritus at Carnegie Mellon University&#8217;s Language Technologies Institute and Computer Science Department, in 19th September 1982:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/emoticons.gif\" alt=\"Examples of early emoticons by Scott Fahlman\" width=\"576\" height=\"225\"><\/p>\n<p>In Japan, for example, a type of emoticon known as kaomoji (\u9854\u6587\u5b57) or \u2018face characters\u2019 developed in the 1980s combining punctuation marks and Japanese katakana glyphs to make horizontal faces, such ass (*_*), (^.^), {^_^} (T_T) &amp;
