Of uncertain origin, possibly from the Proto-Indo-European root <em>*men-<\/em> (to think).<\/p>\n<p>Other words from the same Greek root include Muse, museum and mosaic.<\/p>\n<p>In Old English the word for music (and also joy, frenzy and ecstasy) was <em>dr\u0113am<\/em> [dr\u00e6\u035c\u0251\u02d0m], from the Proto-West Germanic <em>*draum<\/em> (dream), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*draumaz<\/em> [\u02c8dr\u0251u\u032f.m\u0251z] (dream), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*d\u02b0rewg\u02b0-<\/em> (to deceive, injure, damage).
