ah! woe! alas!), possibly related to <em>*waylos<\/em> (howler, wolf) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Celtic\/wailann%C4%81\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The English word <strong>gull<\/strong> comes from the Middle English <em>gulle<\/em> (gull, water bird) and is thought to have been borrowed from a Brythonic language (Welsh or Cornish) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/gull#English\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The French word <strong>go\u00e9land<\/strong> (gull, herring gull) comes from the Breton <strong>gouelan<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/go%C3%A9land\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: the types of gulls mentioned here are commonly seen in Celtic-speaking areas.
