Yesterday I discovered that there are quite a few different French translations of the verb to cure<\/strong>, depending on what kind of cure you’re talking about.<\/p>\n

If you’re curing food by salting, the French equivalent is saler<\/em> (to salt); curing by smoking is fumer<\/em> (to smoke), and curing by drying is s\u00e9cher<\/em> (to dry). Curing leather is traiter<\/em> (to treat), and curing illnesses, problems or habits is gu\u00e9rir<\/em> (to cure, heal, recover).<\/p>\n

The equivalents of these words in Welsh are:<\/p>\n

– halltu = to cure (by salting)
\n– cochi (“to redden”); sychu mewn mwg; sychu trwy fwg = to cure (by smoking)
\n– sychu = to cure (by drying)
\n– cyweirio; barcio; cwrio = to cure (leather)
\n– gwella; iach’au; mendio = to cure (illness, problem, habit)<\/p>\n

Do other languages have separate words for these?<\/p>\n

The English word cure comes from the French curer<\/em>, which means ‘to clean out’ in Modern French, and meant ‘to take care of, to clean’ in Old French, and comes from the Latin c\u016br\u0101re<\/em> (to care for, take care of, cure), from c\u016bra<\/em> (care, concern, trouble), from the Old Latin coira-<\/em>, from the Proto-Indo-European root *k\u02b7eis-<\/em> (to heed).<\/p>\n
