So <em>woordenschat<\/em> is a &#8220;treasure of words&#8221; or &#8220;word treasure&#8221;. It reminds me of the English expression wordhoard, an alternative term for vocabulary, from the Old English <em>wordhord<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Are there similarly interesting terms for vocabulary in other languages?<\/p>\n<p><em>Woord<\/em> also appears in such expressions as: <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; woordafbreking = hyphenation (&#8220;word breaking\/splitting\/dividing&#8221;)<br \/>\n&#8211; woordelijk = verbatim, literal, word-for-word (&#8220;word like&#8221;)<br \/>\n&#8211; woordenboek = dictionary (&#8220;word book&#8221;)<br \/>\n&#8211; woordenlijst = glossary, word-list (&#8220;word list&#8221;)<br \/>\n&#8211; woordenrijk = verboose, volubly (&#8220;word rich&#8221;)<br \/>\n&#8211; woordenstroom = verbiage (&#8220;word flow&#8221;)<br \/>\n&#8211; woordenwisseling = altercation (&#8220;word exchange&#8221;)<br \/>\n&#8211; woordenzifter = nitpicker, niggler, hair-splitter (&#8220;word sifter&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><em>Schat<\/em> also appears in such expressions as: <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; schatje = baby, honey, sweetheart<br \/>\n&#8211; schatkist = treasure chest<br \/>\n&#8211; schatmeester = treasurer<br \/>\n&#8211; schatrijk = immensely rich<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across an interesting Dutch word today &#8211; Woordenschat [\u02c8\u028bo\u02d0\u027ed\u0259sx\u0251t] &#8211; which means vocabulary.
