I wondered it they share the same root.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hlas<\/strong> comes from the Proto-Slavic <em>*gols\u044a<\/em> (voice), from the Proto-Balto-Slavic <em>*galsas<\/em> (voice), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*golHsos<\/em>, from <em>*gels-<\/em> (to call) <\/p>\n<p>The words for voice in other Slavic languages come from the same root: Old East Slavic: <em>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044a<\/em> (golos\u016d); Belarusian: <em>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0441<\/em> (h\u00f3las); Russian: <em>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0441<\/em> (g\u00f3los) and <em>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0441<\/em> (glas &#8211; archaic\/poetic); Ukrainian: <em>\u0433\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0441<\/em> (h\u00f3los); Old Church Slavonic: <em>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044a<\/em> (glas\u016d); Bulgarian: <em>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0441<\/em> (glas); Macedonian: <em>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0441<\/em> (glas); Serbo-Croatian: <em>\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0311\u0441<\/em>; Slovene: <em>glas<\/em>; Kashubian: <em>g\u0142os<\/em>; Polish: <em>g\u0142os<\/em>; Slovak: <em>hlas<\/em>; Lower Sorbian: <em>g\u0142os<\/em>; Upper Sorban: <em>h\u0142\u00f3s<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Also from the same root are the Latin <em>gallas<\/em> (cockrel); Romani <em>glaso<\/em> (voice); Romanian <em>glas<\/em> (voice, vote); Old Norse <em>kalla<\/em> (to call); English call, Dutch <em>kallen<\/em> (to chat, talk); German <em>kallen<\/em> (to scream, talk loudly, talk too much); Lithuanian <em>galsas<\/em> (sound, echo); Welsh <em>galw<\/em> (to call) and <em>llais<\/em> (voice); and possibly the Irish and Scottish Gaelic <em>glaodh<\/em> (to cry, shout).<\/p>\n<p><em>Sources: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/hlas\">Wiktionary<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After writing yesterday&#8217;s post I was thinking about the Czech word hlas [\u0266\u026bas] (voice, vote) and realised that it is quite similar to the Welsh word for voice, llais [\u026cais].
