Another explanation for the name is that it&#8217;s something that easily made and &#8216;thrown out&#8217; of the kitchen [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fried_egg#Netherlands_and_Flanders\">source<\/a>]. It&#8217;s also popular as a breakfast and lunch dish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dutchfood.about.com\/od\/eggdishes\/r\/Uitsmijter.htm\">Here&#8217;s a recipe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>uitsmijter<\/strong> comes from <em>uit<\/em> (out) and <em>smijten<\/em> (to fling, throw, hurl, smite, heave), so an <strong>uitsmijter<\/strong> is a thrower\/flinger out. <em>Smijten<\/em> comes from the Middle Dutch <em>smiten<\/em>, from the Old Dutch <em>*sm\u012btan<\/em>, from the Proto-Germanic <em>*sm\u012btan\u0105<\/em> (to cast, hurl, hit, strike, smear, dirty), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*smeyd-<\/em> (to smear, whick, strike, rub), which is also the root of the Low German <em>smieten<\/em> (to throw, cast, chuck), the West Frisian <em>smite<\/em> (to throw), the German <em>schmei\u00dfen<\/em> (to throw, fling, slam), the English <em>smite<\/em>, and the Danish <em>smide<\/em> (to toss) [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/smijten\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Are there dishes with similarly interesting names in your country?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I came across the wonderful Dutch word uitsmijter, which means bouncer or doorman, and also a type of food consisting of toast, egg(s), ham, bacon or other meat, cheese and pickles is various combinations.
