{"id":9639,"date":"2014-02-19T13:29:57","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T13:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=9639"},"modified":"2014-02-19T13:29:57","modified_gmt":"2014-02-19T13:29:57","slug":"an-owlfully-badgered-cup-of-tea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=9639","title":{"rendered":"An owlfully badgered cup of tea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/badgercup.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"160\" style=\"margin:0 15px 10;x 0x; float:right;\" alt=\"badger and cup\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I discovered that the Italian word for cup, <strong>tazza<\/strong>, is rather similar and possibly confusable with the word for badger, <strong>tasso<\/strong>, which can also mean a rate (of exchange) or a yew (tree). <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unlikely that if you mistakenly ask for <strong>un tasso di t\u00e8<\/strong> rather than <strong>una tazza di t\u00e8<\/strong>, you will be given a badger of tea, but it would be an easy mistake to make, especially if you know the French word for cup, <em>tasse<\/em>, or the Spanish <em>taza<\/em>, or the German <em>Tasse<\/em>, which comes from the French, which comes from the Arabic \u0637\u0627\u0633 (\u1e6d\u0101s &#8211; die; bowl), from the Persian \u062a\u0627\u0633 (t\u0101s &#8211; die\/dice).<\/p>\n<p>I also discovered the wonderful word <strong>owlful<\/strong>, which means full of badgers, or possibly full of owls. How awful it must be to be owlful!
