Words like this with double o just appeal to me for some reason and I have to keep reminding myself that they the oo is not pronounced \/u\u02d0\/, as you might expect in English. <\/p>\n<p>Other words in Dutch with double o include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ook = too, also, likewise, which always reminds me of how the <a href=\"http:\/\/discworld.wikia.com\/wiki\/Horace_Worblehat\">librarian<\/a> speaks in Terry Practhett&#8217;s Discworld stories (oook, eeek!)<br \/>\n&#8211; ooftboom = fruit tree<br \/>\n&#8211; ooi = ewe<br \/>\n&#8211; oom = uncle<br \/>\n&#8211; oor = handle; ear<br \/>\n&#8211; oord = place; spot<br \/>\n&#8211; oost = east<\/p>\n<p>Eye-related words and expressions include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ogen = to look<br \/>\n&#8211; oogappel = eyeball (&#8216;eye apple&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; oogarts = ophtalmologist; oculist (&#8216;eye doctor&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; oog in oog = face to face (&#8216;eye in eye&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; in het oog krijgen = to perceive, to descry (&#8216;to get in the eye&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; in het oog springen = to catch the eye, to stand out (&#8216;to spring\/jump in the eye&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; in het oog vallend = striking (&#8216;falling in the eye&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; met het oog op = considering (&#8216;with the eye up\/on&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; uit het oog verliezen = to lose out of sight (&#8216;to lose out of the eye&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.bab.la\/dictionary\/dutch-english\/oog\">bab.la Dictionary<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I came across the Dutch word oog [o\u02d0x], which means &#8216;spot; hole; period (of time); eye&#8217; &#8211; I was looking for the equivalent of eye when I found it.
