{"id":9448,"date":"2013-12-19T13:19:19","date_gmt":"2013-12-19T13:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=9448"},"modified":"2013-12-19T13:19:19","modified_gmt":"2013-12-19T13:19:19","slug":"bosky-bosses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=9448","title":{"rendered":"Bosky bosses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/bosky.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"322\" align=\"right\" style=\"margin:0 0 10px 10px;\" alt=\"A bosky part of Roman Camp in Bangor\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I discovered today that <strong>bos<\/strong> is a Dutch word for forest or wood, and this immediately made me think of the wonderful English word <strong>bosky<\/strong>, which is defined by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/21756?rskey=g9rHaD&#038;result=1&#038;isAdvanced=false#eid\">OED<\/a> as &#8220;Consisting of or covered with bushes or underwood; full of thickets, bushy&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>The OED says that bosky comes from <em>bosk<\/em>, a Middle English version of bush, which like the Dutch words <em>bos<\/em> and <em>bosje<\/em> (bush), comes from the late Latin <em>boscum \/ boscus<\/em> (wood).<\/p>\n<p>A similar-sounding English word, <strong>boss<\/strong>, is not related to bosky, but does come from Dutch &#8211; from <em>baas<\/em> (boss, owner), from the Middle Dutch <em>baes<\/em>, which originally meant uncle, and was first used to mean master in America during the 17th century [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/21776?rskey=xaBj1H&#038;result=6&#038;isAdvanced=false#eid\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I discovered today that bos is a Dutch word for forest or wood, and this immediately made me think of the wonderful English word bosky, which is defined by the OED as &#8220;Consisting of or covered with bushes or underwood; full of thickets, bushy&#8221;.
