I can guess the meanings of many of the words I encounter as they are similar to German and\/or English, but some are completely different. For example, I just learnt that shop is <strong>(de) winkel<\/strong> \/\u02c8\u028b\u026a\u014bk\u0259l\/, and that shopping is <strong>(het) winkelen<\/strong>,  which have no similarities to shop or shopping in English, or to their equivalents in German &#8211; <strong>Gesch\u00e4ft\/Laden<\/strong> and <strong>einkaufen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/winkel\">Wiktionary<\/a>, <em>winkel<\/em> meant corner in Middle Dutch and Old Dutch, and comes from Proto-Germanic <em>*winkilaz<\/em> (corner, nook), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*weng-<\/em> (to bend, bow, arch, curve) [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/winkel\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/louisa_catlover\/2781587792\/in\/photolist-2oev1Dn-5eHXdX-5eNn9d-mySMFm-6ykRGp-665vpX-6zsTmm-669Mpj\" title=\"Periwinkles\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3139\/2781587792_83d1fe94ba_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" alt=\"Periwinkles\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winkel<\/strong> is apparently cognate with German <strong>Winkel<\/strong> (corner), and the Old English <em>wincel<\/em> (nook, corner), which is found in the word <strong>periwinkle<\/strong> (a type of sea snail). The use of <strong>winkel<\/strong> for shop is apparently derived from the meaning &#8220;corner in which merchandise is stored&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Related words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ijzerwinkel, ijzerwarenwinkel<\/strong> = hardware store (&#8220;iron (wares) shop&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li><strong>platenwinkel<\/strong> = record shop\/store<\/li>\n<li><strong>webwinkel<\/strong> = online shop\/store<\/li>\n<li><strong>winkelen<\/strong> = to shop; to go shopping &#8211; also boodschappen; het boodschappen doen<\/li>\n<li><strong>winkelcentrum<\/strong> = shopping centre \/ mall<\/li>\n<li><strong>winkelwagen<\/strong> = shopping trolley \/ cart<\/li>\n<li><strong>winkeltas<\/strong> = shopping bag<\/li>\n<li><strong>winkelassistent<\/strong> = shop assistant, personal shopper, sales clerk<\/li>\n<li><strong>winkelier<\/strong> = shopkeeper, storekeeper, retailer<\/li>\n<li><strong>winkelhaak<\/strong> = try square; carpenter&#8217;s square<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been learning Dutch for just over a week now and am enjoying it and finding it interesting.
