{"id":9397,"date":"2013-12-05T17:19:09","date_gmt":"2013-12-05T17:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=9397"},"modified":"2013-12-05T17:19:09","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T17:19:09","slug":"quixotic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=9397","title":{"rendered":"Quixotic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The word <strong>quixotic<\/strong> (\/kw\u026ak\u02c8s\u0252t\u026ak\/) has come up a number of times in books I&#8217;ve been reading recently, and though I sort know what it means, I wasn&#8217;t sure, so I thought I&#8217;d find out.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/156828?redirectedFrom=quixotic#eid\">QED<\/a>, quixotic means:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8211; Of an action, attribute, idea, etc.: characteristic of or appropriate to Don Quixote; demonstrating or motivated by exaggerated notions of chivalry and romanticism; naively idealistic; unrealistic, impracticable; (also) unpredictable, capricious, whimsical.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Of a person: resembling Don Quixote; visionary; enthusiastically chivalrous or romantic; naively idealistic; impractical, capricious.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It comes from Don Quixote (<em>Don Quijote<\/em> in Spanish), the hero of Cervantes&#8217; story by the same name, which was published in 1605 and 1615.
