{"id":9158,"date":"2013-09-21T17:29:11","date_gmt":"2013-09-21T17:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=9158"},"modified":"2013-09-21T17:29:11","modified_gmt":"2013-09-21T17:29:11","slug":"knowledge-and-seeing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=9158","title":{"rendered":"Knowledge and seeing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I discovered today that there is a connection between the Gaelic word for knowledge, information, news &#8211; <em>fios<\/em> in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, <em>fys<\/em> in Manx &#8211; and the English words video and wit. <\/p>\n<p>Their roots can all be traced back to the Proto-Indo-European root <em>woid-\/wid-<\/em> (to see\/to know), which, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/229569#eid14146062\">OED<\/a>, is also the root of words such as the Sanskrit \u0935\u0947\u0926\u093e (veda &#8211; knowledge); the Latin <em>vid\u0113re<\/em> to see); the Welsh <em>gwybod<\/em> (to know); the Lithuanian <em>v\u00e9idas<\/em> (face); and the Greek <em>\u1f30\u03bd\u03b4\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9<\/em> (to appear).<\/p>\n<p>The Irish and Scottish Gaelic word <em>fios<\/em> is also related to the word <em>fionn<\/em> (white, fair, pale; sincere, true, certain; small; fine, pleasant), which is how I discovered this while putting together a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/colours\/gaelic.htm\">new page of Scottish Gaelic colours<\/a> &#8211; you can see how easily I get distracted.
