So I thought I&#8217;d look at the origins of a few circus related words.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>circus<\/strong> comes from the Latin word <em>circus<\/em> (ring, circle) and was used by the Romans to for circular arenas and oval race courses (e.g. the Circus Maximus). The Latin word <em>circus<\/em> comes from the Greek word <em>\u03ba\u03af\u03c1\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> (kirkos), &#8220;circle, ring&#8221;, from the Proto-Indo-European word <em>*kirk-<\/em>, from root <em>*(s)ker-<\/em> (to turn, bend)\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>trapeze<\/strong> comes from the French word <em>trap\u00e8ze<\/em>, which comes from the Late Latin <em>trapezium<\/em>, from the Greek <em>\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c0\u03ad\u03b6\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd<\/em> (trapezion), &#8220;irregular quadrilateral&#8221;,  a diminutive of <em>\u03c4\u03c1\u03ac\u03c0\u03b5\u03b6\u03b1<\/em> (trapeza), &#8220;table&#8221;, from <em>\u03c4\u03c1\u03ac-<\/em> (tra-), &#8220;four&#8221;,  and <em>\u03c0\u03ad\u03b6\u03b1<\/em> (peza), &#8220;foot, edge&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><strong>juggle<\/strong> comes from juggler, which comes from the Old French word <em>jangler\/jogler<\/em>, from the Latin <em>iocor<\/em> (&#8220;I jest, I make a joke&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li><strong>clown<\/strong> &#8211; of unknown origin (there weren&#8217;t any last night as it isn&#8217;t that kind of circus).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Etymologies from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/\">Online Etymology Dictionary<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/\">Wiktionary<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night I went to see the NoFitState circus, who are currently in Bangor.
