{"id":8558,"date":"2013-05-03T11:08:18","date_gmt":"2013-05-03T11:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=8558"},"modified":"2013-05-03T11:08:18","modified_gmt":"2013-05-03T11:08:18","slug":"slockit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=8558","title":{"rendered":"Slockit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m currently in Lerwick for the Shetland Folk Festival\uff0cand at a concert last night I heard some interesting Shetland dialect being spoken and sung. <\/p>\n<p>One word I particularly liked was <strong>slockit<\/strong>, which means &#8216;gone out, extinguished&#8217;. It appears in the title of a tune by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Anderson_%28fiddler%29\">Tom Anderson<\/a>, <em>Da Slockit Light<\/em>, which he was inspired to write after seeing how many of the houses in his home village at Eshaness were dark. He thought about the people who use to live there and how they have moved away or passed. For me it&#8217;s fascinating to hear the stories behind tunes and songs like this.<\/p>\n<p>I also discovered today that there is an online dictionary of Shetland dialect with recordings on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetlanddialect.org.uk\/john-j-grahams-shetland-dictionary.php\">shetlanddialect.org.uk<\/a>. Some other interesting Shetland words I came across there include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetlanddialect.org.uk\/john-j-grahams-shetland-dictionary.php?word=2268\">slurd<\/a> = small, driving rain<br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetlanddialect.org.uk\/john-j-grahams-shetland-dictionary.php?word=2239\">skutamillaskroo<\/a> = the game of hide-and-seek played among the cornstacks in the yard<br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shetlanddialect.org.uk\/john-j-grahams-shetland-dictionary.php?word=2238\">skurtfoo<\/a> = an armful. e.g. <em>He cam in wi a skurtfoo o paets for da fire.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m currently in Lerwick for the Shetland Folk Festival\uff0cand at a concert last night I heard some interesting Shetland dialect being spoken and sung.
