They feature in one of the lessons in my Breton course and are explained thus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Les <em>korrigans<\/em> doivent \u00eatre des \u00eatres particuli\u00e8rement petits, puisque ce mot est form\u00e9 de <em>korr<\/em>, &#8220;nain&#8221;, puis du diminutif <em>-ig<\/em> puis du&#8217;un autre diminutif &#8211; obsol\u00e8te aujourd&#8217;hui &#8211; <em>-an<\/em>. Il s&#8217;agit donc de &#8220;petits petits nains.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Or<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The <em>korrigans<\/em> must be particularly small beings, since the word is formed from <em>corr<\/em>, &#8220;dwarf&#8221;, and the diminutive <em>-ig<\/em> and the another diminutive &#8211; now obsolete &#8211; <em>-an<\/em>. So they are &#8220;little little dwarfs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When I read the explanation in French I saw the word <em>nain<\/em> and thought it was the Welsh word for grandmother, not realising that is means dwarf or midget in French. So for a while I believed that the Korriganed were tiny grandmothers. Later I realised my mistake and discovered the actual meaning of that word.<\/p>\n<p>According to legend, the Korriganed erected the standing stones in Brittany.<\/p>\n<p>Do you mistake words in one language for words in another at all?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Korriganed are apparently small creatures that live under standing stones (dolmen\/menhirs) in Brittany.
