The French equivalent is <em>ardoises<\/em>, which I had to look up as it&#8217;s not a word that crops up every day, unless you&#8217;re a roofer or builder. <\/p>\n<p>The Breton word is made up of <em>mein<\/em> (stones &#8211; singular <em>maen<\/em>) and <em>glas<\/em> (blue\/green), and the French word is of uncertain, possibly Gaulish origin &#8211; the <em>ard<\/em> part might come from the Gaulish word <em>*ard(u)<\/em> (high), as in the Ardennes [<a href=\"http:\/\/fr.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/ardoise\">source<\/a>]. The <em>ard<\/em> element is also found in the Gaelic languages meaning high, tall, elevated.<\/p>\n<p>Ardoise (slate) appears in such terms as:<br \/>\n&#8211; ardoise \u00e9lectronique = notepad computer<br \/>\n&#8211; bleu\/gris ardoise = blue\/grey slate<br \/>\n&#8211; toit en ardoise = slate roof<br \/>\n&#8211; carri\u00e8re d&#8217;ardoise = slate quarry<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An interesting Breton word I came across today is mein-glas, or slates (literally, &#8216;blue stones&#8217;).
