{"id":759,"date":"2008-11-05T18:56:32","date_gmt":"2008-11-05T17:56:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/05\/rhewlif\/"},"modified":"2008-11-05T18:56:32","modified_gmt":"2008-11-05T17:56:32","slug":"rhewlif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=759","title":{"rendered":"Word of the day &#8211; rhewlif"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Welsh word <em>rhewlif<\/em> was mentioned during Iolo Willams&#8217; programme, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radiocymru\/safle\/rhaglenni\/pages\/byd_iolo.shtml\"><em>Byd Iolo<\/em><\/a>, on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radiocymru\/\">Radio Cymru<\/a> yesterday. At first I wasn&#8217;t quite sure what he was talking about, but then I realised the word was a compound of <em>rhew<\/em> (frozen) and <em>llif<\/em> (flood) and guessed that it meant glacier. He was in Patagonia at the time, so the context helped. It&#8217;s great when you can work out what a word means without having to look it up.<\/p>\n<p>Another Welsh word for glacier is <em>afon i\u00e2<\/em> (ice river). The equivalent in Irish is <em>oighearshruth<\/em> (ice river\/flow) and in Chinese it&#8217;s \u51b0\u5ddd (b\u012bng chu\u0101n) &#8211; ice river.<\/p>\n<p>The English word glacier comes from the France <em>glacier<\/em>, which is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=glacier\">apparently<\/a> from Savoy dialect word <em>glaci\u00e8re<\/em> (moving mass of ice) and is related to <em>glace<\/em> (ice).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Welsh word rhewlif was mentioned during Iolo Willams&#8217; programme, Byd Iolo, on Radio Cymru yesterday.
