{"id":7314,"date":"2012-07-16T16:18:38","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T16:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=7314"},"modified":"2012-07-16T16:18:38","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T16:18:38","slug":"sonic-the-happy-manx-hedgehog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=7314","title":{"rendered":"Sonic the happy Manx hedgehog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/hedgehog.jpg\" with=\"175\" height=\"121\" align=\"right\" style=\"margin:0 0 10px 15px;\" alt=\"Arkan sonney (hedgehog)\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Arkan sonney<\/strong> is a Manx expression I came across today that means hedgehog, or literally &#8220;happy sucking pig&#8221;. <em>Arkan<\/em> is a diminutive form of <em>ark<\/em> (piglet), and <em>sonney<\/em> means &#8216;affluent, lucky, fortunate, happy&#8217;, and sounds a bit like sonic, hence the little of this post.<\/p>\n<p>Another Manx word for hedgehog is <em>graynoge<\/em>, which is related to the Irish and Scottish Gaelic words for hedgehog: <em>gr\u00e1inneog<\/em> and <em>gr\u00e0ineag<\/em>. The root of these words is <em>gr\u00e1in<\/em> (abhorrence, disgust), so they mean &#8216;the abhorrent\/disgusting one&#8217;. The Welsh word for hedgehog, <em>draenog<\/em>, possibly comes from the same root.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arkan_Sonney\">Wikipedia<\/a>, <em>arkan sonney<\/em>, means literally &#8216;lucky urchin&#8217; or &#8216;plentiful pig&#8217;, and in Manx folklore it refers to a type of supernatural creature that looks like a long-haired pig.
