The more common word for kiss is <em>cusan<\/em> (\/&#8217;k\u026asan\/) or <em>sws<\/em> (\/s\u028as\/) and &#8216;to kiss&#8217; is <em>cusanu<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>When I came across the word <em>poc<\/em> while looking for something else in the dictionary, it immediately reminded me of the Irish word for kiss &#8211; p\u00f3g (\/po:g\/) and I assumed that they came from the same root. At first I thought the root was a ancient Celtic word, but have since discovered, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceantar.org\/Dicts\/MB2\/mb29.html\">MacBain&#8217;s Dictionary<\/a>, that both words come from the Latin <em>p\u00e2cem<\/em>, &#8220;the kiss of peace&#8221;, a part of the Mass.<\/p>\n<p>There are similar words for kiss in the other Celtic languages: <em>p\u00f2g<\/em> in Scottish Gaelic, <em>paag<\/em> in Manx and <em>pok<\/em> in Breton.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Welsh a poc (\/pok\/) or pocyn (\/&#8217;pok\u026an\/), is a kiss, however this word is rarely used in everyday speech.
