{"id":7095,"date":"2012-06-08T10:50:03","date_gmt":"2012-06-08T10:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=7095"},"modified":"2012-06-08T10:50:03","modified_gmt":"2012-06-08T10:50:03","slug":"panache-pegs-and-pinafores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=7095","title":{"rendered":"Panache, pegs and pinafores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One thing we discussed last night at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Le-groupe-de-conversation-fran%C3%A7ais-de-Bangor\/246293001730\">French Conversation Group<\/a> was whether <strong>panache<\/strong> means the same thing in French as it does in English. <\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/136654?rskey=E3sOCT&#038;result=1&#038;isAdvanced=false#eid\">OED<\/a>, panache [\/p\u0259\u02c8na\u0283\/ (UK) \/p\u0259\u02c8n\u00e6\u0283\/ (USA)] comes from the Middle French <em>pennache<\/em>, which originally meant a tuft or plume of feathers, and by the late 19th century had come to mean &#8220;manly elegance or swagger, chivalrous or heroic courage, flamboyance, elegance, style&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p><em>Pennache<\/em> comes from the Italian <em>pennacchio<\/em> (plume), from the post-classical Latin <em>pinn\u0101culum<\/em>, a dimmunitive of <em>pinna<\/em> (wing, feather, pointed peak), which comes from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*bend-<\/em> (something protruding). Other words that possibly come from the same root include pin, peg, pinafore, pinion and pinacle.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.le-dictionnaire.com\/definition.php?mot=panache\">Le Dictionnaire<\/a>, the French word <strong>panache<\/strong> means:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; ornement compos\u00e9 de plumes flottantes, plac\u00e9 sur une coiffure = an ornament of floating feathers worn on the head<br \/>\n&#8211; \u00e9l\u00e9ment qui rappelle la forme de cet ornement = something resembling such an ornament<br \/>\n&#8211; surface triangulaire du pendentif d&#8217;une vo\u00fbte en forme de sph\u00e8re = a triangular area of a roof pendant in the shape of a sphere<br \/>\n&#8211; (au sens figur\u00e9) \u00e9l\u00e9gance et brio = (figuratively) elegance and panache<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/french-english\/panache\">Reverso<\/a>, <strong>panache<\/strong> can also mean:<br \/>\n&#8211; a plume (of smoke\/water) = une panache (de fum\u00e9e\/d&#8217;eau)<br \/>\n&#8211; showiness<\/p>\n<p>Some examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; avec panache = gallantly<br \/>\n&#8211; sans panache = unimpressive <\/p>\n<p>A related word is <strong>panach\u00e9<\/strong>, which means:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; d\u00e9cor\u00e9 de couleurs vari\u00e9es = decorated with various colours \/ varigated \/ colourful<br \/>\n&#8211; compos\u00e9 de diff\u00e9rents \u00e9l\u00e9ments = made up of different parts \/ mixed<br \/>\n&#8211; boisson qui est compos\u00e9e de bi\u00e8re et de limonade = shandy (a mixture of beer\/lager and lemonade)<\/p>\n<p>Some examples:<br \/>\n&#8211; glace panach\u00e9e = mixed ice cream<br \/>\n&#8211; salade panach\u00e9e = mixed salad<br \/>\n&#8211; \u0153illet panach\u00e9 = variegated carnation <\/p>\n<p>The verb <strong>panacher<\/strong> (to mix) also exists.<\/p>\n<p>An alternative way to say &#8216;with great panache&#8217; is <em>avec maestria<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One thing we discussed last night at the French Conversation Group was whether panache means the same thing in French as it does in English.
