Salt must have been a luxury when this one was coined.<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smo.uhi.ac.uk\/gaidhlig\/corpus\/samhlaidhean\/\">Scottish Gaelic similes<\/a> (<em>samhlaidean<\/em>) used to indicate that something is very expensive include:<\/p>\n<p><em>Cho daor ris an aran-mhilis<\/em> &#8211; as dear as cake<br \/>\n<em>Cho daor ris an t-salann Spainnteach<\/em> &#8211; as dear as Spanish salt<br \/>\n<em>Cho daor ris an uisge beatha<\/em> &#8211; as dear as whisky<\/p>\n<p>An equivalent simile in Irish  is <em>chomh daor le h-im na Fraince<\/em> (as dear as French butter), which was coined in County Down in the 18th century, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daltai.com\/grammar\/similes\/c-d.htm\">this site<\/a>.
