It was originally developed to write Sanksrit but was later adapted to write many other languages.  The origin and meaning of <em>devan\u0101gar\u012b<\/em> (also written as devnagari, devanagari, deonagri) remains dubious. It comes from the Sanskrit words <em>deva<\/em> (god, celestial; brahman), and <em>n\u0101gar\u012b<\/em> (city, possibly from <em>tamizh<\/em>, where it means &#8220;temple&#8221;).
