I wondered what <em>pelmeni<\/em> might be, so thought I&#8217;d find out.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelmeni\">Wikipedia<\/a>, <em>pelmeni<\/em> are &#8220;dumplings consisting of a filling wrapped in thin, unleavened dough that originated in Siberia&#8221;. The dough is made of flour and water, with eggs sometimes added, and the filling is minced pork, lamb, beef, mutton or other meat, mixed with pepper or other spices and onions, or with fish or mushrooms. They are cooked by boiling them in water or broth, or by frying.<\/p>\n<p>In Russian they are known as <em>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/em> (pel&#8217;meni &#8211; pl) \/ <em>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/em> (pel&#8217;men&#8217; &#8211; sg), in Belarusian they are <em>\u043f\u044f\u043b\u044c\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0456<\/em> (pyal&#8217;meni), in Ukrainian they are <em>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0456<\/em>, (pel&#8217;meni), and in Latvian they are <em>pelme\u0146i<\/em>. The name comes from <em>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044f\u043d\u044c<\/em> (pel&#8217;nyan&#8217;), which means &#8220;ear bread&#8221; in the Komi, Udmurt, and Mansi languages.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sras.org\/pelmeni_history\">School of Russian and Asian Studies<\/a> Russian <em>pelmeni<\/em> (<em>\u0440\u0443\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/em>) come from Siberia and the word comes from Komi, though the receipe might originally come from China.
