A friend asked what gala actually means; I wasn&#8217;t sure, so decided to find out.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/oed.com\/view\/Entry\/76119?rskey=4XuxgF&#038;result=1&#038;isAdvanced=false#eid\">OED<\/a>, <strong>gala<\/strong> (\/\u02c8ga\u02d0l\u0259\/, \/\u02c8ge\u026al\u0259\/) means &#8220;gala dress, festal attire&#8221;; &#8220;a festive occasion; a festival characterized by the display of finery and show&#8221; or &#8220;festive, gay&#8221; (<em>chiefly North America<\/em>). It comes from the French word <em>gala<\/em> (official reception).<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=gala\">Online Etymology Dictionary<\/a>, gala comes from the French <em>en gala<\/em>, which perhaps comes from the Old French <em>gale<\/em> (merriment), from <em>galer<\/em> (rejoice, make merry).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I went to an event described as a &#8216;gala concert&#8217; at Bangor University.
