An emperor is the largest size &#8211; 72 \u00d7 48 (all measurements in inches), an antiquarian is 53 \u00d7 31, and an elephant is 28 \u00d7 23. There are also double elephants (40 \u00d7 27) and grand eagles (42 \u00d7 28 \u00be), while the smallest size of writing paper is the pott (15 \u00d7 12 \u00bd). A bit more interesting than A4, A3, etc!<\/p>\n<p>Quantities of paper also have special terms to describe them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>quire = 24 sheets of paper<\/li>\n<li>ream = 480 or 516 sheets of paper, or 20 quires<\/li>\n<li>bundle = 2 reams<\/li>\n<li>bale = 5 bundles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quire comes from the Latin <em>quatern\u012b<\/em>, set of four, four each, via the Vulgar Latin <em>quaternus<\/em>, the Old French <em>quaer<\/em> and the Middle English <em>quayer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ream comes from the Arabic <em>rizma<\/em>, bundle, via Old Spanish <em>resma<\/em>, Old French <em>reime<\/em>, and Middle English <em>reme<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sources: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/quire\">The Free Dictionary<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/home.clara.net\/brianp\/paper.html\">Paper measures<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do the above have in common?
