Os is also used in English as a zoological and medical term for bone and is pronounced \/\u0252s\/ (UK) or \/\u0251s\/ (US). Final consonants of French words aren&#8217;t usually pronounced, unless followed by a word beginning with a vowel, so you just have to memorise ones like <em>os<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Os<\/strong> appears in such words and expressions as:<br \/>\n&#8211; ossature \/\u0254saty\u0280\/ = frame(work), skeletal\/bone structure<br \/>\n&#8211; osselet \/\u0254sl\u025b\/ = knucklebone, ossicle (small bone in the middle ear), osselet (small animal bone)<br \/>\n&#8211; osseux \/\u0254s\u00f8\/ = bone, osseus, bony<br \/>\n&#8211; ossification = ossification<br \/>\n&#8211; ossifier \/\u0254sifje\/ = to ossify (to harden, make into bone)<br \/>\n&#8211; ossuaire \/\u0254s\u0265\u025b\u0280\/ = ossuary (receptacle or place for the bones of the dead)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; c&#8217;est un paquet \/ sac d&#8217;os = he&#8217;s a bag of bones, he&#8217;s skin and bone<br \/>\n&#8211; mouill\u00e9e \/ tremp\u00e9 jusqu&#8217;aux os = to be soaked to the skin, wet through<br \/>\n&#8211; donner un os \u00e0 ronger \u00e0 qn = to give sb something to keep them out of mischief (or) keep them quiet<br \/>\n&#8211; l&#8217;avoir dans l&#8217;os = to be done, to get egg all over one&#8217;s face (slang)<br \/>\n&#8211; il y a un os = there&#8217;s a snag \/ hitch<br \/>\n&#8211; tomber sur un os = to come across a snag<\/p>\n<p><strong>Os<\/strong> comes from the Latin <em>os<\/em> (bone), from the ancient Greek <em>\u1f40\u03c3\u03c4\u03ad\u03bf\u03bd<\/em> (bone), which is also the root of the prefix <em>osteo-<\/em>, and is not to be confused with <em>\u014ds<\/em> \/\u0254\u02d0s\/, (mouth, face, entrance). <\/p>\n<p>In Welsh <em>os<\/em> means &#8216;if&#8217;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I discovered that the French word for bone, os, is pronounced \/\u0254s\/ in the singular, as I suspected, but \/o\/ in the plural [source].
