{"id":6222,"date":"2011-11-10T15:30:52","date_gmt":"2011-11-10T15:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=6222"},"modified":"2011-11-10T15:30:52","modified_gmt":"2011-11-10T15:30:52","slug":"doxastic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=6222","title":{"rendered":"Doxastic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I came across the word <strong>doxastic<\/strong> (\/d\u0252k\u02c8s\u00e6st\u026ak\/) today in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0061176052\/omniglot-20\"><em>Being Wrong &#8211; Adventures in the Margin of Error<\/em><\/a> by Katryn Schulz. It means &#8220;pertaining to beliefs&#8221; and appears in the expression used in philosophy, &#8216;First Person Constraint on Doxastic Explanation&#8217;, or as Schulz terms it &#8221;Cuz It&#8217;s True Constraint&#8217;. It means that we have only a limited number of ways to explain why we believe what we do.<\/p>\n<p>We often believe things to be self-evidently true without necessarily being explain why or to provide reasons. For example, you might be convinced that your method or system for learning languages works and anybody who doesn&#8217;t agree just needs to be convinced of this. You might have invested a lot of time and money to develop and promote your system, so it&#8217;s in your interest to believe that the system works. You might not be consciously aware of this, but such things are often obvious in methods and systems developed by others.<\/p>\n<p>Doxastic comes from the Greek <em>\u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03b9\u03ba-\u03cc\u03c2<\/em> (forming opinion, conjectural), from <em>\u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03b1\u03c3\u03c4\u03ae\u03c2<\/em> (conjecturer), from <em>\u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03ac\u03b6-\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd<\/em> (to conjecture) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/57325?redirectedFrom=doxastic#eid\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The dox part, from the Greek <em>\u03b4\u03cc\u03be\u03b1<\/em> (opinion, glory), also appears in such words as paradox &#8211; para comes from the Greek <em>\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac<\/em> (by the side of, beside, past, beyond), so it means &#8216;beyond belief&#8217;, and orthodox &#8211; ortho comes from the Greek <em>\u1f40\u03c1\u03b8\u03bf-<\/em> (straight, right), so it means &#8216;right belief&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Dox is also internet slang for personal details (name, address, etc) that are visible online.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across the word doxastic (\/d\u0252k\u02c8s\u00e6st\u026ak\/) today in Being Wrong &#8211; Adventures in the Margin of Error by Katryn Schulz.
