As is often the case, there are a number of different translations of this word, depending on the context:<\/p>\n<p><strong>sauver<\/strong> = to save (person, animal, jewels, building etc), rescue, salvage<br \/>\n &#8211; sauver la vie \u00e2\/de qcn = to save sb&#8217;s life<br \/>\n &#8211; sauver sa peau = to save one&#8217;s skin, neck, hide<br \/>\n &#8211; sauver son \u00e2me = to save one&#8217;s soul<br \/>\n &#8211; sauver les apparences = to keep up appearances<br \/>\n &#8211; sauver la face = to save face<br \/>\n &#8211; sauve-qui-peut = stampede \/ every man for himself \/ run for your life<\/p>\n<p>There is also a reflexive version of this verb, <strong>se sauver<\/strong>, which means to run away, to be off. For example, <em>Il s&#8217;est sauv\u00e9 \u00e0 toutes jambes<\/em> (He ran away as fast as he could); <em>Allez, je me sauve!<\/em> (Right, I&#8217;m off! \/ I&#8217;m out of here!). <\/p>\n<p>When you want to talk about saving money, time or energy the word to use <strong>\u00e9conomiser<\/strong>. For example, <em>vous \u00e9conomisez un euro si vous achetez 3 pacquets<\/em> (You save a euro if you buy 3 packets). If you&#8217;re talking about putting money, food or other things aside for a rainy day though, the expression to use is <strong>mettre de c\u00f4t\u00e9<\/strong> or <strong>garder<\/strong>. For example, <em>il garde les vieux journaux pour les bonnes \u0153uvres<\/em> (he&#8217;s saving (up) old newspapers for charity).<\/p>\n<p>The French equivalents for &#8216;to save a goal&#8217; are <em>emp\u00eacher de marquer<\/em>, <em>faire un blocage<\/em> or <em>sauver un but<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>sauver<\/strong> comes from the Old French  <em>salver\/sauver<\/em>, from the late Latin <em>salv\u0101re<\/em> (to save), from the  Latin <em>salvus<\/em> (safe, secure, immune from punishment, intact, undamaged), from the Proto-Indo-European base <em>*sol-<\/em> (whole).
