{"id":6061,"date":"2011-10-12T15:25:47","date_gmt":"2011-10-12T15:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=6061"},"modified":"2011-10-12T15:25:47","modified_gmt":"2011-10-12T15:25:47","slug":"gloomth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=6061","title":{"rendered":"Gloomth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to Bill Bryson in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0767919386\/omniglot-20\"><em>At Home, A Short History of Private Life<\/em><\/a>, <strong>Gloomth<\/strong> describes the ambience of neo-Gothic or Gothick architecture. <\/p>\n<p>It was coined by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horace_Walpole\">Horace Walpole<\/a> (1717-1797), an art historian, playwright, antiquarian and politician who revived the Gothic style and applied it to his house, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strawberryhillhouse.org.uk\/\">Strawberry Hill<\/a>, which he built in south-west London. He also wrote a Gothic novel, <a href=\"ftp:\/\/ibiblio.org\/pub\/docs\/books\/gutenberg\/etext96\/cotrt10.txt\"><em>The Castle of Otranto<\/em><\/a>, and is credited with coining or introducing over 233 words into English, including airsickness, fairy tale, falsetto, frisson, impressario, malaria, mudbath, serendipity and souvenir.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of how Walpole used <strong>gloomth<\/strong> (from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/79095?redirectedFrom=gloomth#eid\">OED<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; One has a satisfaction in imprinting the gloomth of abbeys and cathedrals on one&#8217;s house.<br \/>\n&#8211; [Strawberry] is now in the height of its greenth, blueth, gloomth, honeysuckle, and seringahood*.<br \/>\n&#8211; Strawberry, with all its painted glass and gloomth.<\/p>\n<p>*seringahood = the condition of abounding in seringa bloom. Seringa is any of the shrubs of the genus <em>Philadelphus<\/em> common in gardens; the mock-orange and the word comes via French from the Latin <em>syringa<\/em>, from the Greek <em>\u03c3\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b3\u03b3-<\/em> from <em>\u03c3\u1fe6\u03c1\u03b9\u03b3\u03be<\/em> (syrinx &#8211; pipe, tube, channel, fistula)<\/p>\n<p>Gloom comes from the Middle English <em>gloum(b)e<\/em>, from the Old English <em>*gl\u00famian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Gothic comes from the Goth, from the Old English <em>Gota<\/em>, from the late Latin <em>Goth\u012b\/Gotth\u012b<\/em>, from the Greek <em>\u0393\u03cc\u03b8\u03bf\u03b9<\/em>, from the Gothic <em>*Gut\u00f4s\/*Gutans<\/em>.
