I came across the German word Rundfunk<\/strong> the other day and it just appealed to me, so I thought I’d find out more about it.<\/p>\n

Rundfunk<\/strong> \/\u02c8\u0280\u028antf\u028a\u014bk\/ means broadcasting, radio, wireless or broadcasting company\/corporation, though would probably also be a good name for a band.<\/p>\n

It also appears in such expressions as:<\/p>\n

– Rundfunkansager – radio announcer
\n– Rundfunkgesellschaft – broadcasting company
\n– Rundfunksendung – radio programme
\n– Rundfunksender – radio transmitter<\/p>\n

Rund<\/strong> \/\u0280\u028ant\/ means round, rounded, circular, spherical, plump, about, roughly, flatly, and comes the Middle Low German runt<\/em>, from the Old French ront<\/em>, from the Latin rotundus<\/em> (round), from rota<\/em> (wheel, disk), from the Proto-Indo-European *Hroth\u2082-o-<\/em> (wheel) [source<\/a>] – the same root as the English word round.<\/p>\n

One thing I like about German is words link Rundfunk<\/em>, which seem to me to be somehow more earthy and straightforward they their more flowery Latin or Greek-derived equivalents.
