{"id":448,"date":"2007-07-19T21:08:59","date_gmt":"2007-07-19T20:08:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/19\/rivers-of-white\/"},"modified":"2007-07-19T21:08:59","modified_gmt":"2007-07-19T20:08:59","slug":"rivers-of-white","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=448","title":{"rendered":"Rivers of white and run arounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing yesterday&#8217;s theme of typography, here are a few more interesting typographic terms I came across today:<\/p>\n<p><strong>River of white<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; a column of white space that occurs when word space in quite a few successive lines of type happen to end up below each other, as mentioned by P Terry Hunt in the comments on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/18\/knotholes\/\">yesterday&#8217;s post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Run around<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; this when you fit the text around a picture or other design element.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pagination<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; this means either arranging the type and other elements so that they will be output in page format, or numbering the pages.<\/p>\n<p>This is a term I heard frequently when I worked in the design department as a lone web developer surrounded by graphic designers.
