{"id":4447,"date":"2011-02-11T12:28:49","date_gmt":"2011-02-11T12:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=4447"},"modified":"2011-02-11T12:28:49","modified_gmt":"2011-02-11T12:28:49","slug":"spolubydlici","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=4447","title":{"rendered":"Spolubydl\u00edc\u00ed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I came across the Czech word <strong>spolubydl\u00edc\u00ed<\/strong> [\u02c8sp\u0254l\u028abidli\u02d0tsi\u02d0] on a blog I read today and was pleased to realise that I could work out what it meant from its constituent parts. <em>Spolu<\/em> means together, <em>byd<\/em> is related to <em>bydlet<\/em> (to live), I didn&#8217;t know what <em>l\u00edc\u00ed<\/em> signified, but correctly guessed that the word meant &#8220;house mate \/ roommate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I learnt <em>spolu<\/em> (together, along with, jointly, in company with) yesterday in the Czech lesson I was working my way through. It appears in the context, <em>Mus\u00edme si n\u011bkdy spolu zahr\u00e1t<\/em> (We must have a game together sometime). I&#8217;d come across <em>bydlet<\/em> before in such expressions as <em>Bydl\u00edm v Praze<\/em> (I live in Prague) and <em>Bydl\u00edte tu n\u011bkde bl\u00edzko?<\/em> (Do you live somewhere near here?).<\/p>\n<p>Other words containing <em>spolu<\/em> include: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>spoluautor<\/em> &#8211; co-author<\/li>\n<li><em>spolucestuj\u00edc\u00ed<\/em> &#8211; travel companion, fellow traveller, passenger<\/li>\n<li><em>spoluhr\u00e1\u010d<\/em> &#8211; playmate, team mate<\/li>\n<li><em>spolumajitel<\/em> &#8211; co-owner, joint owner<\/li>\n<li><em>spoluob\u010dan<\/em> &#8211; fellow-citizen<\/li>\n<li><em>spolupr\u00e1ce<\/em> &#8211; cooperation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the way, what do you call someone you live with or share a house, flat, apartment, room or other dwelling with?<\/p>\n<p>I would say house mate for someone you share a house with, flat mate for someone you share a flat with, and room mate for someone you share a room with. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across the Czech word spolubydl\u00edc\u00ed [\u02c8sp\u0254l\u028abidli\u02d0tsi\u02d0] on a blog I read today and was pleased to realise that I could work out what it meant from its constituent parts.
