It took quite a while to establish which finger corresponded to which name &#8211; to make this clear, I found a picture of a hand, added labels and uploaded it to my site.<\/p>\n<p>This is what the fingers are called in those languages:<\/p>\n<p>\u62c7\u6307 (boshi) \/ \u89aa\u6307 (oyayubi)  lit. &#8220;thumb\/parent finger&#8221; = thumb<br \/>\n\u4eba\u5dee\u3057\u6307 (hitosashiyubi) = lit. &#8220;person offering finger&#8221; = first finger \/ index finger<br \/>\n\u4e2d\u6307 (nakayubi) = middle finger<br \/>\n\u85ac\u6307 (kusuriyubi) = lit. &#8220;medicine finger&#8221; = third finger \/ring finger<br \/>\n\u5c0f\u6307 (koyubi) = lit. &#8220;little finger&#8221; = fourth finger \/ little finger \/ pinky<\/p>\n<p>In Latin the fingers are named thus:<\/p>\n<p>Thumb = Polex<br \/>\nFirst finger = Demonstratus (pointer)<br \/>\nSecond finger = Impudicus (gesticulates)<br \/>\nThird finger = Annularis (ring)<br \/>\nFourth finger = Auricularis (removing wax from ear)<\/p>\n<p>Their names in Welsh are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Thumb =  bawd<br \/>\nFirst finger = bys troed (foot finger)<br \/>\nSecond finger = bys canol (middle finger)<br \/>\nThird finger = bys y fodrwy (ring finger)<br \/>\nFourth finger = bys bach (little finger)<\/p>\n<p>and Irish they&#8217;re:<\/p>\n<p>Thumb = ord\u00f3g<br \/>\nFirst finger = corrmh\u00e9ar (odd finger)<br \/>\nSecond finger = m\u00e9ar fhada (long finger)<br \/>\nThird finger = m\u00e9ar f\u00e1inne (ring finger)<br \/>\nFourth finger = l\u00faid\u00edn<\/p>\n<p>What about in your language?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When chatting with some Japanese friends today, the subject of finger names came up for some reason &#8211; specifically what the different fingers are called in Japanese and English.
