It comes from the Old French <em>taverne<\/em>, (shed made of boards; booth; stall; tavern; inn), from the Latin <em>taberna<\/em> (shop, inn, tavern) &#8211; originally &#8220;hut or shed&#8221;, from Etruscan [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=tavern\">source<\/a>]. The Greek word \u03c4\u03b1\u03b2\u03ad\u03c1\u03bd\u03b1 (taverna) comes the Latin [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/taverna\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Column comes from the Old French <em>colombe<\/em> (column, pillar), from the Latin <em>columna<\/em> (pillar), which the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=column\">Online Etymology Dictionary<\/a> says is a collateral form of <em>columen<\/em> (top, summit), from the Proto-Indo-European base <em>*kel-<\/em> (to project), but which Nicholas Ostler believes comes from Etruscan.<\/p>\n<p>Cap comes from the Old English <em>c\u00e6ppe<\/em> (hood, head-covering, cape), from the Late Latin <em>cappa<\/em> (a cape, hooded cloak), which is possibly a shortened from <em>capitulare<\/em> (headdress) from <em>caput<\/em> (head) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=cap\">source<\/a>], or from the Etruscan.<\/p>\n<p>Other Latin words that are thought to come from Etruscan include <em>voltur<\/em> (vulture), <em>\u0101truim<\/em> (forecourt), <em>fenestra<\/em> (window), <em>caseus<\/em> (cheese), <em>cul\u012bna<\/em> (kitchen), <em>tuba<\/em> (trumpet), <em>urna<\/em> (urn), <em>m\u012bles<\/em> (soldier), <em>Apr\u012blis<\/em> (April), <em>autumnus<\/em> (autumn) and <em>laburnum<\/em> (shrub).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do the words in the title of this post have in common?
