It is thought to come from an old Germanic word <em>liste<\/em>. A related adverb is <em>lestement<\/em>, which means nimbly, agilely, in a sprightly manner, lightly or offhandedly.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s related to the Spanish word <em>listo<\/em>, which has a number of meanings, including &#8220;ready, prepared, clever, sharp-witted, able, nimble&#8221;. It&#8217;s also related to the Portuguese word <em>lesto<\/em>, which means &#8220;quick, deft, nimble, swift, fleet, light footed, rapid, ready, clever, dexterous or skillful&#8221;. Other related words include the German <em>listig<\/em> (cunning, devious, shrewd) and <em>leicht<\/em> (easily, effortlessly, gently), which is related to the English word light(ly).<\/p>\n<p>Light (not heavy) comes from the Old English <em>leoht<\/em>, from Proto-Germanic <em>*lingkhtaz<\/em>, from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*le(n)gwh-<\/em> (light, easy, agile, nimble), which is the root of <em>leste<\/em>, and also of lever [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?search=agile\">Source<\/a>]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leste adj.
